Bengaluru: Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai On Wednesday, the state government was contemplating to bring a law in the assembly to prevent religious conversion.
“We are looking at bringing an anti-conversion law,” Bommai said.
The Karnataka Chief Minister was responding to the allegation of conversion in Yadgir following reports of forced conversions from the region.
“There are complaints of forced conversions in the state. Serious consideration is being given to enacting a law to fully regulate it,” he said.
On September 21, Karnataka Home Minister Araga Gyanendra had also said that the government was considering bringing an anti-talk law in the state and for this he was reading the laws of other states.
“We are planning to bring a bill (anti-conversion bill). Some states have already brought anti-conversion bills. We will study them and bring that bill,” the home minister said.
Earlier in April this year, the Gujarat Assembly passed the ‘Gujarat Independence Act, 2021’ with a majority to bring in more stringent punishment against forced conversions through marriage.
Gujarat became the third state after Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh to enact a law against forced conversion.
