Karnataka Elections 2023: In an exclusive interview to News18, Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said that the BJP will not need a post-poll alliance as it will cross the majority mark of 113 seats on its own

Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai told News18 in an exclusive interview that there is no need for the BJP to enter into post-poll alliances as the party will get a clear mandate in the Karnataka elections. On his own political future following the Karnataka election results on 13 May, Bommai said the party would “take care” of him.

“There has already been talk of a Congress-JDS post-poll alliance. They did it last time and are trying to do it again. But neither will get any numbers,” he said.

Asked whether the BJP was ready to sit in the opposition if it failed to reach the magic figure of 113 seats in the 224-member Karnataka Assembly, Bommai said the situation would not arise. People will give us a clear mandate. Since we are very confident, this question is not on our table.

BJP has not formally announced the face for the post of Chief Minister karnataka election 2023 It has maintained that it is contesting the elections under the state leadership of former BS Yediyurappa, its most prominent Lingayat face, and Bommai.

After leaving the Janata Dal (United), Bommai first contested the 2008 assembly elections as a BJP candidate. Shiggaon has a sizeable Muslim population, and the Congress has fielded Yasir Ahmad Khan Pathan from the constituency, while Shashidhar Yeligar is the JD(S) candidate.

With the exit of prominent Lingayat faces like Jagadish Shettar and Laxman Savadi joining the Congress, Lingayat leaders in the BJP have voiced the need to launch a “Lingayat CM” campaign in the Karnataka elections to brand the ruling party as a Congress candidate. The story can be contested. as “anti-Lingayat”.

The politically influential Lingayat community makes up about 17% of the state’s population, mostly in the northern parts which the BJP considers its strong vote-base.
