Tourism hub Mysore wore a deserted look on Saturday and Sunday, despite the government lifting the Covid-induced weekend curfew across the state. Thousands of Bangaloreans make their way to the city of Mysore over the weekend, but they chose to stay indoors this weekend despite tourist destinations functioning.
Mysore Zoo And the Palace saw relatively few tourists, although Chamundi Hills Voted more. Stakeholders of the travel and hospitality industry claim that the number of tourists visiting the city was close to zero. As a result, business was also sluggish.
While KSRTC buses, and public transport services such as autorickshaws and hotels were open, locals and tourists stayed away. Vehicular movement was limited, so much so that it looked like curfew was still in place.
C Narayan GowdaThe president of the Mysuru District Hotel Owners Association said there were no restrictions for hotel and tourism activities, but there were hardly any customers. “It looked as if the weekend curfew had been extended. People were choosing to stay in their homes. For us, it was a very disappointing weekend,” said Gowda.
Mysuru Travels Association president BS Prashanth said the record number of Covid infections reported from the district would have discouraged tourists from visiting the city. “All activities were sluggish. The city assumed a deserted look,” he said.
Meanwhile, preparations were in full swing to resume on-campus classes in private schools from Monday after being closed for nearly 12 days. Schools were closed for students of classes 1 to 9 since January 12 following a rise in Covid-19 cases. However, the district administration has allowed schools to resume physical classes from Monday.
“All schools are planning to reopen, and parents are eagerly waiting to send their children back to school,” said the Mysuru district representative of the Associated Management of Primary and Secondary Schools (KAMS).
