The Karnataka Congress on Saturday expressed concern over the use of casteist slurs in a play performed at a college fest here.

It said in its social media handle, “A video containing derogatory and objectionable content on Dr BR Ambedkar and Dalit communities is being screened at an event organized at Jain College, Bengaluru.”

Demanding action from the city police commissioner and the Bengaluru police in this regard, the party said, “Police should take cognizance of the incident and initiate legal action.”

A recent incident during a college skit in Bengaluru has created a controversy and a police complaint has been filed.

The Deloitte Boys, who performed the play, have tendered an unconditional apology. However, the debate on this issue is gaining momentum.

On Thursday evening, a group of students brought the incident to light by publishing an online petition on jhatka.org. The petition states that the college troupe of the Center for Management Studies (CMS), Jain University, staged an incredibly casteist and insensitive drama at the event.

The anonymous petitioners objected to the normalization of caste discrimination on the pretext of humour. The skit was performed as part of ‘MadAds’, a segment in the festival where participants had to advertise fictional products with humour.

CMS’s theater group ‘The Deloy’s Boys’, which is in controversy, showed a lower caste man trying to date an upper caste woman in his play. The skit turned BR Ambedkar into Bir Ambedkar. The era of Dalit why, when you can be D-Lit.

Akshay Bansode, state member of Vanchit Bahujan Yuva Aghadi, has filed a police complaint under provisions of the Maharashtra Atrocities Act and IPC. The complainant urged the police to treat the complaint as an FIR and initiate action against the protesters and the university.
