Karnataka: Brother of girl who opposed hijab ban attacked, 3 held | Mangaluru News – Times of India

UDUPI: Hazra Shifa, one of the six girls from Government PU College for GirlsUdupi, who are protesting the hijab ban, said her brother was attacked for the stand she has taken.
Saif, 20, was allegedly attacked while closing Bismilah Hotel in Malpe late on Monday.
Police registered a case and, hours later, arrested three people — identified as Deepak, 25, who allegedly slapped the victim, Manoj, 25, and Sanil Raj, 26, who works at Malpe harbour.
The three were released on station bail. Police said a preliminary investigation suggests they are not linked to any organisation.
Shifa has not been attending regular classes since the last week of December when the controversy first broke.
In a tweet to Udupi police on Tuesday, Shifa said: “My brother was brutally attacked by a mob. Just because I continue to stand for My #Hijab which is MY RIGHT. Our property was ruined as well. Why?? Can’t I demand my right? Who will be their next victim? I demand action to be taken against the Sangh Parivar goons (sic).”
In a later tweet where she tagged Karnataka’s DGP & IG and Udupi police, she said: “I appreciate that a case has been filed against the assaulters of my brother Saif but I demand that they are held accountable and be arrested at any cost immediately ( sic).”
Masood Manna, committee member, Campus Front of India alleged Saif was attacked by a mob of “150 Sangh Parivar goons”. “Not only students, but the lives of their family members are at stake as well. Stringent action must
be taken,” Manna said.
A senior police officer involved in the investigation said a mob had gathered to question Saif after a television channel had interviewed the girl’s family with a hidden camera. Two youths reportedly pelted stones at the hotel, damaging a windowpane and one perpetrators slapped the victim around.
“The victim is being treated at a private hospital,” the officer said.
On Monday, Aliya Assadi, another of the six students from the government PU college, in a tweet, claimed that they were being harassed after the college leaked their contact details. She said they are getting abusive calls from anonymous callers and “random people” were barging into their homes. She urged the DGP & IG to take action.
