BENGALURU: Practical exams for II PU Science students went off smoothly across colleges in Bangalore North education district on Monday, the department of PU education revealed.
In Bapu PU CollegeYeshwantpur, where a ruckus had broken out last week after some students held protests for not being allowed to attend classes with their hijabs, four of the protesters attended the exam without headscarves.
“They came to the college in hijab but removed it and appeared for the exam,” said Sriram GK, DDPU North, “They wore it again while leaving for home. No issues were reported anywhere in my jurisdiction. ,
In Government PU College, Yelahanka, the students who protested last week have their exams on Wednesday. “On Monday, we had exams for students of Government PU Colleges in Bagalur, Jakkur, Raj anakunte and East West PU College. A total of 99 students appeared for the exam,” said Palaksha Tprincipal.
Of the 45 students who had protested from this college, 13 attended classes without their hijabs. The others stayed away, the principal said.
It may be recalled that protests had erupted in this college on Friday when students were stopped from entering the campuses even though the college does not have a uniform or dress code policy. Later, on Saturday, the DDPU met the girls and “convinced them” to attend classes.
Science stream students were issued hall tickets on the condition that they will attend practical exams without hijabs, the DDPU had said. Exams for colleges in Bengaluru South will be held from Wednesday (February 23).
50 students boycott classes
In Davanagere, more than 50 Muslim students of AVK Women’s College protested in front of the college on Monday and urged the principal to allow them to attend classes with their hijabs. Principal Prof BP Kumar and his colleagues tried to convince the students to follow the government order and remove their hijabs while in class.
This went on till about 12. 15pm but the students refused to budget. They intensified their protest by sitting on the road in front of the college. A similar protest was held at state-run Seethamma PU College where over 25 girls protested. Police were called in and they threatened to book the girls. The students eventually attended classes without the hijab.
Students miss exam
Protests continued in Vijayapura and Bagalkot districts too. Students of Government PU and Degree College in Vijayapura boycotted practical examinations on Monday, despite college staff and police pleading with them to stop their protest.
The students submitted a memorandum to the government at the DCs office, demanding that they be allowed to wear hijabs. In Bagalkot, four students of Basaveshwar PU Science College returned home. They had come to submit their notebooks but returned home without submitting them.
