Karnataka: 16,000 students in Haveri do not have access to digital learning. Hubli News – Times of India

Haveri: The reopening of schools in the current scenario seems to be a distant prospect, with students, parents and teachers resigning themselves to the fact that online classes, at least for the foreseeable future, will remain the norm.
And although schools have been closed for more than 15 months now, efforts have been made by government agencies, schools and NGOs to bridge the digital divide between people with and without means, in urban areas rather than villages. Not to mention easy access to the Internet. In this digital age, a large section of students is still left behind.
In Breakdown In the district alone, about 16,000 students, both in primary and high schools, are not in possession of the necessary equipment needed to ensure uninterrupted education.
About 2.8 lakh students have enrolled in schools – government, aided and unaided institutions – over two lakh are enrolled in primary schools, while about 60,000 have enrolled in high schools. About 16,000 of these students, according to a survey conducted by Department Of Public Instruction, mainly from rural areas do not have access to learning tools, causing them serious losses.
Teachers have been asked to group their students based on the degree of their access to smartphones, computers and television while planning their lessons. The teachers have been instructed to appeal to the parents to arrange any kind of digital learning platform for their children.
Andanappa, Deputy Director of Public Instruction Vadgeri Said that all efforts are being made to involve every last student in this process. Vadgeri said, “Many of our teachers are coming to their doorsteps, distributing lessons and involving them in activities, especially those enrolled in government schools, who do not have access to digital modes of education.”
‘Teachers are doing all they can’
“We will devise a better plan to ensure that children do not miss out on learning. To that end, our teachers are going the extra mile while many donors have volunteered to donate smartphones and tablets to children from underprivileged sections of the society. Mohammad Roshan Chief Executive Officer, Haveri District jury.
