Ladakh: Kargil Vijay Diwas is celebrated every year on 26 July to honor the war heroes of Kargil, who laid down their lives while serving the motherland. Celebrations are organized in the Kargil sector and across the country to remember the contribution of the Indian Army.
Even as celebrations remained dim due to the pandemic, 559 lamps were lit at the Kargil War Memorial in Ladakh’s Dras region on Sunday to commemorate the epic battles of Tololing, Tiger Hill and others. The nation remembers the supreme sacrifice made by our soldiers and their exemplary courage in the most brutal wars.

The 22nd Kargil Vijay Diwas was celebrated in the presence of top Army officers, family members of Army personnel and others.
What is the significance of the day?
Launched in 1999, ‘Operation Vijay’ saw Indian armed forces fighting vigorously to defend the borders against Pakistani troops and insurgent forces. After defeating its opponents in the war, the Indian Army hosted the national flag in Kargil on 26 July. About 527 Indian soldiers laid down their lives in the line of duty and combat and over 1,300 were injured in the war.
It was the same day that India had successfully won the Kargil War and regained control of the high posts. The Kargil War lasted 60 days, ending on 26 July 1999, when India regained control of its authority. Even after 22 years, the country remembers the sacrifice of the heroes who sacrificed their lives for the country.
