Karan Johar praises Ranveer Singh, Kabir Khan and team; Calls ’83’ a ‘huge achievement’ – Times of India

Kabir Khan’s upcoming film ’83’ has been one of the most awaited and most talked about films of Bollywood. The sports drama will be seen recreating the winning moments that led to India’s victory in the 1983 Cricket World Cup. As the film gears up to hit the theaters on December 24, here are five reasons why you shouldn’t miss the Ranveer Singh starrer.

Ranveer Singh, who plays the lead role of cricketer Kapil Dev in the film, has impressed everyone with his transformation. From growing a real mustache to adopting Kapil’s unique bowling technique, to practicing four hours of cricket for over six months, Ranveer has done it all to get into his character. And the result is before all of us. The ace actor was shouted out for hard work and dedication by none other than the famous cricketer himself.

Ranveer will be seen playing the role of Kapil Dev who was the captain of the Indian cricket team in 1983. However, he is not the only central character of the film. All the other 12 players have been given equal importance.

The makers have roped in some stellar actors who will be seen playing the iconic cricketers of that time. The film stars Tahir Raj Bhasin as Sunil Gavaskar, Saqib Saleem as Mohinder Amarnath, Hardy Sandhu as Madan Lal, Ammy Virk as Balwinder Sandhu, Sahil Khattar as Syed Kirmani, Chirag Patil as Sandeep Patil. Adinath Kothare will be seen as Dilip Vengsarkar, as Dinkar Sharma. Kirti Azad as Dhairya Karva as Ravi Shastri, Jeeva as Krishnamachari Srikkanth, Jatin Sarna as Yashpal Sharma, Nishant Dahiya as Roger Binny and R Badri as Sunil Valson.

If getting good actors and training them in cricket was not enough, the makers of the film reportedly received the written consent of each of the 12 players, all of whom agreed to come on board as consultants. Not only this, the entire cast along with former cricketers Balwinder Sandhu and Yashpal Sharma trained in a camp set up at the Dharamsala Cricket Ground in April 2019. The film has also been shot at various prestigious locations like Glasgow, Dulwich College. London, Edinburgh Cricket Club, The Oval Cricket Ground and others.

Cricket and cinema are both like religions in India and when the two combine, miracles are bound to happen. The Kabir Khan-directed film will recreate India’s unprecedented journey in the 1983 World Cup. It will not only trace the journey of players who overcame all odds to win the World Cup, but will also shed light on the behind the scenes stories of cricketers, their families and others.

After sharing screen space thrice in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Goliyon Ki Rasleela: Ram Leela’, ‘Bajirao Mastani’ and ‘Padmavat’, Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh will be seen together on the silver screen once again. Kabir Khan’s ’83. The actress will be seen playing the role of Kapil Dev’s wife Romi Dev in the film. Not only this, Deepika is also co-producing the film. This will be his second production after Meghna Gulzar’s ‘Chhapaak’.
