Earlier, in an exclusive interview to News18 Showsha, Adah Sharma had also said that it is ‘not right’ to ban a film without watching it.

Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut on Tuesday said the ban on ‘The Kerala Story’ by some states after it was cleared by the CBFC was ‘unconstitutional’. Banning a film passed by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) defies the Constitution. The ban on ‘The Kerala Story’ by some states is not correct.”

Directed by Sudipto Sen, The Kerala Story has polarized political discourse in the country as it depicts how women from Kerala were forced into conversion and recruitment by the terrorist group Islamic State (IS). The West Bengal government had banned the film on 8 May in view of the tension between the communities. Cinemas in Tamil Nadu had decided to stop screening it citing the law and order situation and poor footfalls.

Last week, the Supreme Court stayed the West Bengal government’s order banning the film in the state and asked Tamil Nadu to ensure the safety of those watching the film. According to Ranaut, people often complain that Bollywood doesn’t make the kind of movies they want to see.

He said, “When a film like The Kerala Story is made, people’s grievances go away. Such films help the film industry.”

Earlier, in an exclusive interview to News18 Showsha, Adah Sharma had also said that it is ‘not right’ to ban a film without watching it. He called it an ‘insult’ to the Central Board of Film Certification. “I think the censor board is the official jury for all films, everywhere. If they decide, maybe people should see it and then have their opinion on it, whether they like it or not. But to ban without seeing? I don’t know This is not correct. Then we are not respecting the censor board at all,” Adah told us.

The Kerala Story stars Adah Sharma in the lead role along with actresses Yogita Bihani, Sonia Balani and Siddhi Idnani. The film has so far earned over Rs 200 crore at the domestic box office.
