Kangana Ranaut is gearing up for the release of her highly anticipated directorial debut, ‘Emergency’, where she will portray the late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. As the film’s release date approaches, Kangana has shared her thoughts on the rise of OTT platforms and the impact they have on society, particularly concerning the objectification of women.
In a recent interview with The Times of India, Kangana expressed her concerns about the content available on these platforms, calling for stricter censorship measures. She highlighted the growing trend of individuals consuming violent and disturbing content in private, often with headphones on, which she believes contributes to the increased objectification of women.
“The content has also gotten very violent and appalling, especially with individual viewing where people watch anything with headphones on. This has led to a significant rise of the objectification of women,” Kangana remarked. She argued that online shows, including those on platforms like YouTube, should be subject to censorship. “Online shows should be censored, including YouTube. Many countries have done it and they are atleast better than India. Look a the kind of cases that are happening in India; it’s worrisome for everybody.”
Kangana also touched on issues related to feminism, cautioning against a cultural shift that might strip women of their inherent qualities. “Honestly I feel that it doesn’t have to get to a toxic direction where we start to make women like men and take away the essence of feminine- their birthright to be nurtured, to be loved, to be admired, and to be protected. So, I think, the culture shouldn’t become toxic because we always tend to go to extremes.”
As she prepares for ‘Emergency’s’ release on September 6, Kangana is not only making waves with her portrayal of Indira Gandhi but also stirring important conversations about the influence of digital content on societal values. The film, set during one of India’s most turbulent political periods, features a star-studded cast including Anupam Kher, Mahima Chaudhary, Milind Soman, Shreyas Talpade, Vishak Nair, and the late Satish Kaushik, and promises to be a powerful exploration of historical events.
