hey ram

Haasan made his directorial return in 2000 with the historical crime drama Hey Ram, in which he also starred. Shot simultaneously in Tamil and Hindi, the film depicts the alternate history of the partition of India. Shah Rukh Khan made his Tamil debut with Hey Ram which also starred Rani Mukerji. The film received critical acclaim.

Virumandi

Continuing his legacy of acting in his directorial debut, Haasan next made the Tamil action drama Virumandi in 2004. The film is based on the controversy over the death penalty through interviews of two prisoners. The film was a critical and commercial success.

Vishwaroopam

It took 10 years for Haasan to return to direction. This time he came up with the spy thriller Vishwaroopam. The film featured names like Rahul Bose, Shekhar Kapur, Pooja Kumar, Andrea Jeremiah and Jaideep Ahlawat. The film went on to become the highest Tamil grosser of the time, and Haasan was praised for making a film of international standards.
