Kamal Haasan Jayanti: Best performance of an acting legend

You can be versatile but can you ever be as versatile as Kamal Haasan. Actor, director, screenwriter, choreographer, producer, playback singer and lyricist, there is very little that a Tamil superstar cannot do. The 67-year-old actor, born on November 7, is one of the best actors in the country, with over 200 films. Today on his birthday, we round up some of his best films to list some of the greatest repertoire by the legend.

Nayakan (1988)

Directed by Mani Ratnam, Nayakan is an epic crime drama, where Haasan shows the evolution of an ordinary man into a fierce don through his seamless transition into the role of Velu, both young and old. The film is inspired by Marlon Brando’s Godfather. Haasan is a big fan of Brando, and also does a voiceover, mimicking the actor’s dialogues from The Godfather. The actor received the National Award for this film.

Pushpak Vimana (1987)

This dark comedy ran with a major experiment of making a silent film, and it was a memorable performance from the always relatable actor.

Moondram Pirai (1982)

The film’s disturbing climax shocked the audience and Haasan’s performance earned him his first National Award. Balu Mahendra also made a Hindi remake of this Kamal Haasan-Sridevi film with the same star cast as Sadma.

Hey Ram (2000)

Stars get complacent and rarely experiment with the image they create but Haasan is a unique gem who has tried to use his stardom to present the audience with meaningful cinema. Haasan is wearing the director’s hat for this period film, which has the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi in the background. The film tries to show the audience that the country was given communal poison at the time of Partition.

Dashavataram (2008)

Like all the roles Haasan has played in this film in his life, Haasan has played 10 characters different from each other in this film in every way.
