Kaliyaganj Rape-Murder: BJP, TMC Workers Clash In Bengal’s Cooch Bihar, Several Detained

Kolkata: A scuffle broke out between BJP and TMC workers during protests over the Kaliaganj rape and murder case and the alleged murder of a BJP leader in West Bengal’s Coochbehar district. According to reports, several BJP workers protesting against the alleged murder of the BJP leader and the Kaliaganj rape and murder case were taken into custody by the police after a scuffle.

West Bengal BJP workers have called a 12-hour shutdown in North Bengal today over alleged police brutality against common people in the state. BJP leader Debashree Chowdhary alleged that the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC government is against the Rajbanshi people. “We have given a bandh call after seeing the situation here. This incident (alleged murder of a BJP leader) was very shameful. Rajbangis are being continuously attacked, which shows that TMC is against Rajbangis,” Choudhary said. “

Meanwhile, in Siliguri, BJP workers were seen closing shops and calling for a 12-hour bandh. On Friday, West Bengal BJP President Sukant Majumdar said, ‘BJP has called for a 12-hour bandh in North Bengal on Friday in protest against police brutality on common people.’

The bandh has been called after the death of BJP worker Mrityunjay Burman in Radhikapur near Kaliyaganj in Uttar Dinajpur district. BJP alleges that Mrityunjay died in police firing.

Reacting to the matter, BJP MP Debashree Chowdhary said, “The ruling party (Trinamool Congress) is wrong if they think they can silence us by firing on our cadres or making random arrests. The whole country is with us.” Chowdhary said. He alleged that state police personnel shot dead BJP worker Mrityunjay Barman late on Wednesday night when he had come to arrest the party’s panchayat samiti member Bishnu Barman in Kaliaganj.

Calcutta High Court asked for detailed report

Meanwhile, the Calcutta High Court on Thursday sought a detailed report of the investigation conducted by the Mekhilganj police into the alleged rape and murder of a minor girl at Kaliaganj in West Bengal’s North Dinajpur district.

A bench of Justice Rajasekhar Mantha fixed May 2, the next day, for hearing. During the hearing, the court asked to preserve the videography of the postmortem as the court would look into it later if needed.

The court also sought the FIR and the postmortem report and asked the police to hand over a copy of the same to the family members of the victim and also to the member of the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights. The case pertains to the death of a minor girl in Kaliaganj.

On April 20, the victim’s body was found floating in a canal in Kaliaganj. Locals allege that the minor was raped and murdered. This caused uproar and protests. People blocked the road, burnt tires and set fire to many shops. There were also some clashes between the local people and the police.

A video also went viral which purportedly shows police dragging the victim’s body while taking it for post-mortem. However, the Superintendent of Police, Uttar Dinajpur, said on April 22 that the post-mortem report of the victim given by the doctors showed that the death was due to some poisonous substance. He said, “The post-mortem report of the victim given by the doctors shows that the death was due to some poisonous substance. There is no major injury. We will again ask the doctors to clarify if there is any sexual injury.”
