Kabul seeks Islamabad’s help to persuade Taliban to hold talks – Times of India

Islamabad: Afghanistan has sought help from Pakistan to persuade Pakistan Taliban To hold talks with officials in Kabul as fierce fighting between Afghan and rebel forces kills dozens of people on a daily basis across the country.
“We have high hopes from Pakistan. I hope Islamabad will persuade the Taliban to negotiate again,” Afghan Foreign Minister Hanif Atmar told a private Pakistani TV station on Friday.
However, Prime Minister Imran Khan has said several times that Washington’s time frame from Afghanistan has reduced Islamabad’s influence on the Afghan rebels.
The situation in Afghanistan has become more volatile, with the Taliban launching a blitzkrieg campaign and capturing key districts in the country, in a swift move with US forces slowly withdrawing from the country.
Responding to a question whether the Afghan government feels that the US has betrayed it, Atmar said Washington had signed a deal with the Taliban with honest intentions.
“The Taliban did not fulfill their part of the deal and betrayed the whole world. The Taliban is making a big mistake. We have all extended a hand of friendship to him.”
He said the Afghan government is asking the Taliban to respect the Doha peace accord, adding that Kabul has fulfilled its obligations to the deal related to the prisoner swap and the withdrawal of foreign troops from the country.
The Afghan Minister further said that Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and al-Qaeda has tied up forces with other terrorist elements and with the Taliban fighting against Afghan government forces.
“We are monitoring relations between the TTP, the Taliban and al-Qaeda on a daily basis,” Atmar said, adding that links between these groups certainly exist.
According to the minister, the Afghan government has divided the militant groups of foreign fighters into different categories.
“First among them are fighting for a global agenda like al-Qaeda and Daesh. Al-Qaeda and Daesh terrorists have a presence in the border areas between Pakistan and Afghanistan.
“Then, we have regional players. TTP, Lashkar-e-Taiba, Jaish-e-Mohammed, Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan (IMU), Eastern Turkestan Islamic Movement (ETIM), the Ansarullah: And Jundulla, ”said the spirit.
“Not Afghanistan alone, the entire region is threatened by these groups. These groups threaten Pakistan, Afghanistan, China, India, Russia and the Middle East.
Afghan FM He said that his country has spoken of regional cooperation to solve the problem of terrorism without discrimination of good or bad terrorists.
“Peace between Afghanistan and the Taliban will ensure that these elements do not find safe haven in Afghanistan,” he said.
