Indian Kabaddi player Sandeep Singh Nangal Amben was shot dead on Monday as a group of unidentified gunmen fired at least 20 rounds of bullets targeting his head and chest.
The victim of the sudden horrific attack was taken to the hospital, where he was declared brought dead on arrival.
The disturbing incident took place at around 1800 hrs in Malian village of Jalandhar.
The 40-year-old kabaddi player, who was one of the biggest organizers of the tournament in his village, had at least four attackers standing behind cover during the ongoing kabaddi game.
Video footage showed men firing multiple rounds at a man outside camera range. The said video has since gone viral online.
The gruesome incident has left the nation stunned and scared as crowds gathered in the open stadium to watch the match away from the venue terrified by the noise of gunshots.
Of the bullets fired, it is suspected that at least seven or eight bullets were fired in the body of the international kabaddi star. Another youth present at the scene was allegedly shot in the leg by a projectile slug that strayed in the process.
The attack appears to be highly coordinated with the miscreants who ambushed a player running the local kabaddi league and there is speculation about an internal power struggle between Singh and the rest of the members. Going around online.
Singh lives in England with his wife and child, and had come to India to attend a local kabaddi tournament held near his home town.
Singh played as a stopper and is said to have developed a passion for the game at a very young age and played in state level matches before climbing the ladder. After establishing a name for himself, he has done his business in many countries like Canada, United Kindom and United States of America.
The local police have started an investigation into the incident that claimed the life of an athlete, who has represented Team India at international level, even captaining the team on occasion.
