K Srikkanth has opened his list of 20 players for the 2023 ODI World Cup and named two cricketers whom he believes should not play in the marquee event.

control board for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided on 20-member probables for 2023 World Cup, and with it fans and former cricketers have started speculating an ideal Indian team for the marquee event. Former India selector and 1983 World Cup winner Krishnamachari Srikkanth also expressed his views on the same and spoke about his prospects for the World Cup.

During an interaction with Star Sports, Srikkanth spoke at length about the list of 20 players and named two cricketers whom he believes should not feature in the ODI World Cup.

Srikkanth said, “Two players will not be in my list, Shubman Gill and Shardul Thakur.”

It should be noted that Gill has been a part of India’s ODI squad in the recent past, but only when no senior player is available. Gill got his chance in ODIs last year when Rohit Sharma was rested to prepare for the T20 World Cup. After that, when Team India announced the squad for the Bangladesh series, Gill was again left out as Rohit Sharma was leading the team. However, Gill has now got a place in the home ODI against Sri Lanka, but only because Shikhar Dhawan was dropped from the squad.

Meanwhile, Shardul Thakur played in the ODIs against Bangladesh but was left out of the squad for the Sri Lanka series.

Further, Srikkanth gave his opinion from the perspective of a former selector and said that for the World Cup, he would rely on players who can single-handedly win matches.

“If you want my medium pacers, they would be Bumrah, Umran Malik, Arshdeep Singh and Mohammed Siraj. Four medium pacers is enough. Shami would be one such. I am speaking as chairman of selectors and not as a fan, I would have brought Hooda instead. And I believe these are the people who will win the match, what do you want? You want to win matches, you need horses like Yusuf Pathan who will single-handedly win you matches.

Srikkanth also expressed confidence in Rishabh Pant and said that he can win matches for India.

“Even if they give you three out of ten matches, that is enough. Don’t expect consistency from these players. We have such a player in the team at the moment, Rishabh Pant, don’t expect consistency from him. I don’t want consistency, I want to win matches and if these guys can do that single-handedly, great. Who will do this for you? Rishabh Pant will do that for you,” said Srikkanth.
