Delhi High Court Judge Justice Pratibha M Singh gave an advice to women lawyers to stop ‘the court from stereotyping them’. Justice Pratibha M Singh on Tuesday said, “Be able, give up Bollywood movies and parlor time. Devote to the law. Pick up your fight. Don’t fight with everyone.”

Speaking at a felicitation ceremony for Supreme Court Judge Justice Hima Kohli organized by ‘Women in Law and Litigation’, Justice Singh urged women lawyers to cut down on the time spent in going to parlors or watching movies and save their time and law. Focus on practice.

Justice Singh urged women lawyers to refrain from seeking sympathy from the court in the name of family as it tends to stereotype them and instead seek ways to achieve an ideal work-life balance.

“Don’t seek sympathy from the court or the lawyers on the other side or even your clerk. You don’t need to tell them that my child is unwell, I have to pick up my daughter from school. Please don’t do this… that stereotypes you,” she said.

Justice Singh also advised women lawyers to hire a driver to help them work in the car. “Always have a domestic help, a driver. Don’t think ‘I have to make sacrifices’. There is no need for a sacrificial mentality for women. You just have to fight it. Always have a driver because then you can work in the car,” she insisted.

He exhorted women lawyers to focus on expertise in the field of law rather than a renunciation attitude and to face all stress with a smile: “Your child feels ‘mummy is not at home’ (Mummy is not at home)”. But one day, he’ll be proud that you’re a lawyer.”

Speaking at the same event, Chief Justice of India NV Ramana said that women in the legal profession face obstacles like their role in society and the constant spread of certain attitudes about prejudice.
