New Delhi:

Justice BV Nagarathna is in line to become the first woman Chief Justice of India in 2027.

Led by Chief Justice NV Ramana, the Supreme Court Collegium has recommended the names of nine judges for promotion to the top court.

Justice BV Nagarathna, who is currently a judge of the Karnataka High Court, has also been recommended by the collegium. He was appointed as an additional judge of the Karnataka High Court in 2008 and as a permanent judge almost two years later.

He is likely to have a tenure of one month. His appointment will be a historic moment for the country’s judiciary. She will follow in the footsteps of her father ES Venkatramaiah, who was the Chief Justice of India between June 1989 and December 1989.

Justice Hima Kohi and Justice Bela Trivedi are the other two women judges in the list of recommendations.

There has been a demand for a woman Chief Justice in India.

Before his retirement, former Chief Justice of India SA Bobde said that “The time has come for India to have a woman Chief Justice”.

“We have women’s interest in our mind, and we are implementing it in the best possible way. No attitude has changed in us. The only thing we have to do is bring in good candidates,” she said in April.

Chief Justice Ramana had earlier also said that it is time for a woman to lead the judiciary.

Senior advocate and former Additional Solicitor General PS Narasimha will also be a judge of the Supreme Court.

The other judges recommended by the five-member collegium are Justice Abhay Srinivas Oka, Justice Vikram Nath, Justice JK Maheshwari, Justice CT Ravikumar and Justice MM Sundaresh.
