Vaishak Vijayakumar also credited pacer Mohammed Siraj’s role in the powerplay and admitted that Wednesday’s match was one of his off days.

After their 21-run loss to Kolkata Knight Riders at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Royal Challengers Bangalore pacer Vaishak Vijayakumar admitted that the 30 extra runs the hosts gave away didn’t help them at all.

Jason Roy’s aggressive 29-ball 56 and skipper Nitish Rana’s 21-ball 48 along with Rinku Singh and David Wiese’s unbeaten 18 and 12 propelled Kolkata to 200/5.

Although Bangalore were 27 runs away in 7–11 overs, hitting just one boundary, he conceded 69 runs in the last five overs of Kolkata’s innings, besides dropping catches by captain Nitish Rana in overs 13 and 15.

Chasing 201, Bangalore were restricted to 179/8, despite captain Virat Kohli’s 37-ball 54 and Mahipal Lomror’s 18-ball 34. Leg-spinner Suyash Sharma took 2/29, before Varun Chakravarthy and Andre Russell took 3/3. 27 and 2/29 respectively in breaking Kolkata’s four-match losing streak in IPL 2023.

“Excited about the performance, and I think we probably had him till the 17th over. A couple of dropped catches and we gave away about 30 extra runs which didn’t help. Started well with the bat in a few overs but lost a lot of wickets in the end and hence the result was not in our favor.”

He also credited fast bowler Mohammad Siraj’s role in the powerplay and admitted that Wednesday’s match was one of his off days. “Siraj is bowling really well, and the plan is to bowl it forward and let the ball swing.”

“It was one of those days when the ball didn’t swing much, and that’s why he went for runs. We’ve been doing really well in the powerplay and it was one of those games where we didn’t find success “

Apart from Kohli and Lomror, none of the batsmen stepped up in Bangalore’s chase with five-wicket hauls to the spinners. “I don’t know about the batting plan, but we always play bold. It doesn’t matter who is bowling and if it is a bad ball, he should be punished. A few balls had to be hit, and it was unfortunate that we hit it straight to the fielder,” Vaishak said.

Bangalore will now play five straight matches starting with their clash against Lucknow Super Giants on May 1 at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium.
