GENEVA: Rich countries are opening up societies and vaccinating young people who are not at high risk of COVID-19, while the poorest countries lack doses. World Health Organization Condemning the global failure, said on Friday.
The situation in Africa, where new infections and deaths increased by nearly 40% last week compared to the previous week, is “so alarming” as the delta variant spreads globally, said WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said.
“Our world is failing, as a global community we are failing,” he said at a news conference.
Tedros, who is Ethiopian, punished unnamed countries for their reluctance to share supplements with low-income countries. He compared it to the HIV/AIDS crisis, when some argued that African nations were unable to access complex treatments.
“I mean that attitude should be a thing of the past,” Tedros said. “The problem now is the supply problem, just give us Vaccines”
“The difference between the rich and not is now fully exposing the unfairness of our world – injustice, inequality, face it,” he said.
Many developing countries are much better than industrialized countries at mass vaccinating their populations against infectious diseases ranging from cholera to polio, WHO’s top emergency expert mike ryan said.
“The level of paternalism, the level of colonial mentality that says ‘we can’t give you anything because we’re afraid you won’t use it’. I mean seriously, in the middle of a pandemic?”
COVAX, jointly run by the GAVI Vaccine Coalition and WHO, has distributed 90 million COVID-19 vaccine doses to 132 countries since February, but has faced major supply issues since India suspended vaccine exports.
“We’ve had zero doses of . through COVAX this month astraZeneca Vaccines, Zero Dose sii Vaccines (Serum Institute of IndiaZero dose of J&J (Johnson & Johnson) vaccine,” said Bruce Aylward, Senior Advisor to WHO.
“The situation is serious now.”
