Judhishthira’s complaint was that the local people were being denied better wages while the people from outside western countries were being denied. Orissa were getting more. Hailing from Bijepur in Bargarh district, he earned Rs 22,000 a month. He apparently tried to talk to the management several times. But when no one listened, he planned to intimidate the company officials into paying more.
On 29 July, Abutar Khan, the site in-charge of the company, received a letter at his office address. The registered letter, which was sent by a Western Odisha Maoist organization and signed by its alleged chief DC Mugun, threatened to kill him if he did not provide better remuneration to the employees of the area. The letter contained the names of eight employees who were required to pay better salaries to the company. He also received repeated threatening calls and messages from a mobile phone number.
A similar letter was sent to Ranjeet Mohapatra, head of the Human Resources Department, demanding better financial benefits for the employees of western Odisha. This letter was sent in the name of Lal Bahini, Western Odisha. Abutar had recently contacted the police. What caught the attention of the police during the investigation were the names of the eight employees mentioned in the letter.
‘Not firm’ pay raise Despite repeated appeals
The police started tracking their mobile phone numbers and they traced Judhishthira. “Based on a complaint by one Abutar Khan regarding threats made by a Maoist, Badmal police arrested Judhishthira Padan, an employee of Bijepur working in the same private company. The police have seized a threat letter along with a phone from which he had made the threat calls,” said Jharsuguda SP Bikash Das.
Talking to the media, Yudhishthira said, ‘I have been working in the company for 12 years. People from outside the area were getting higher wages than the local people. I had asked for a hike many times but no one listened. I thought if I could scare the management, we would get better pay.”
