Joint Team of Left, Cong Looking into Post-poll Violence in Tripura Attacked: Police

At least 20 shops were torched in the post-poll violence in Nehalchandranagar village of Bishalgarh subdivision on Wednesday night.

A fact-finding team comprising MPs and MLAs of the Left and Congress, who arrived here on Friday to probe the post-poll violence in Tripura, was attacked in Sipahijala district.

Assistant Inspector General (AIG) Law and Order Jyotishman Das Chowdhary said none of the eight-member team was injured in the attack in Nehalchandranagar.

Two-three vehicles with leaders of Left parties and Congress were vandalized by unidentified miscreants, he said, “A delegation of MPs, MLAs and local leaders of Left parties and Congress made an unscheduled visit to Nehalchandranagar in Bishalgarh today. During his visit, slogans were raised and some miscreants attacked his vehicles. The police escort team swung into action and rescued the members of the delegation safely.

“No one was reported injured, but two-three vehicles were damaged in the attack,” the official said.

He said that one person has been detained in the incident.

Raids are being conducted to identify and arrest other miscreants. Senior police officers are on the spot”, he said.

The CPI(M) said a joint team of the Left parties and the Congress is visiting various violence-affected areas of West Tripura, Sipahijala and Khowa during the day.

“Once a delegation comprising CPI(M) MP E Karim and Congress MP Abdul Khaliq and AICC general secretary Ajay Kumar descended on the Nehalchandranagar market, they were attacked by miscreants chanting ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai’. Senior CPI(M) leader Rakhal Mazumdar said, “One vehicle was badly damaged, while two more cars were also vandalized.”

“Our members were saved because they left immediately”, he said, adding that Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee president Birjit Sinha and state secretary of the election-winning CPI(M) Jitendra Chowdhary were also part of the fact-finding delegation.

The team is expected to stay in the state till March 12, after which it will submit a report and the issue will be taken up in the next Parliament session, which begins on March 13, CPI MP Binoy Viswam tweeted on Thursday.

Most of the post-poll violence was reported from Sipahijala and Khowai districts.

Chief Minister Manik Saha has asked the police to take strict action against the miscreants to maintain peace.

The results of the Tripura Assembly elections were declared on 2 March.

The BJP-IPFT government returned to power for a second consecutive term in the state as the saffron party bagged 32 seats in the 60-member assembly, while its ally, the Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura, got one constituency.
