Jodhpur discom directs uninterrupted power supply during Ramzan, order withdrawn after criticism

According to sources, the earlier order was issued following a letter written by Minister of State Zahida Khan to Power Minister Bhanwar Singh Bhati, urging it to ensure that there is no power cut in Muslim-dominated areas during Ramzan.

The power distribution company here issued instructions to its engineers in 10 districts to ensure uninterrupted power supply to all “Muslim-dominated areas” during Ramzan, drawing criticism from the BJP for which it withdrew the directions. The April 1 order issued to the Jodhpur discom read by the superintending engineers, “The month of Ramzan is commencing from April 4. Do not shut down and ensure uninterrupted power supply in Muslim dominated areas so that there is no inconvenience to the fasting people.” Responding to this, the Rajasthan BJP tweeted asking why an order of similar effect was not issued by the Jodhpur Discom in the form of Navratras.

Union minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat in a statement termed the order as a “Tughlaqi farman” and urged the Congress government in the state to keep Jodhpur out of a “communal conspiracy”. Amid mounting protests, discom officials on Tuesday passed a new order, removing words such as “Ramadan” and “Muslim-dominated areas”. “Keeping in view the high temperatures this year and the festivals falling in the coming months, ensure adequate power supply for public convenience and proper water supply,” the fresh read.
