JK Rowling Responds to Putin’s Comment About ‘Cancel Culture’, Calls Him Out for ‘Killing Citizens’

Harry Potter author JK Rowling has clapped at Russian President Vladimir Putin’s remarks about the West’s ‘cancelling-culture’ that tries to curb freedom of expression, reports ‘Deadline’. Over the past few days, several large Western corporations stationed in Russia have canceled their action plans and big-ticket releases in Russia due to the Putin administration’s invasion of Ukraine. In a televised meeting, Putin compared the cancellation of Russian cultural events to the actions of Nazi Germany.

He said, “Today they (Western countries) are trying to annihilate a whole thousand-year-old country, our people. I’m talking about the progressive discrimination of everything related to Russia, a trend that many Westerners do.” The infamous cancellation culture has become a cancellation of culture.”

According to Deadline, he then compared his treatment of Russian cultural figures with Rowling’s exclusion of her alleged anti-transgender views, as she said, “Not too long ago, they canceled children’s author, Joan Rowling. , because she, the author of hundreds of millions of copies of books spread around the world, failed to please the supporters of so-called gender freedom.”

As a reaction to Putin’s remarks, the author shared on her Twitter that she does not welcome the opinion of the Russian leader.

She tweeted, “Western Cancellation culture is probably not criticized by those who are currently killing civilians for the crime of resistance, or those who jail and poison their critics. #IStandWithUkraine.”

He also included an article about the jailed Putin critic Alexei Navalny.

Meanwhile, a few weeks ago, Harry Potter star Emma Watson appeared to cast a shadow over JK Rowling at the BAFTA awards ceremony. As host Rebel Wilson introduced Watson, she said, “Next here to present the award is Emma Watson. She calls herself a feminist, but we all know she’s a witch.” Watson then said to Dias, “I am here for all the witches!”

Fans have been sharing the clip on Twitter and commenting that Watson’s comment is a dig at Rowling.
