Jharkhand: Plan to set up fast track court for speedy trial of mob lynching cases

The Jharkhand government on Monday said that the government is planning to set up fast track courts in the state for speedy trial of mob lynching cases. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Alamgir Alam said that a total of 46 cases of mob lynchings have been registered in the state between 2016 and 2021. In 11 such cases, 51 accused were sentenced to life imprisonment after the completion of the trial. Alam said the process of conviction in the rest of the cases is at different stages.

Bagodar MLA Vinod Kumar Singh had raised the issue of mob lynching during the question hour of the assembly and urged the government to set up fast track courts for speedy trial of such cases. Singh also expressed concern over the poor distribution of compensation to the dependents of the victims. Citing the example of Sunil Pasi, who was lynched by a mob in December last year, Singh said his family has not yet received any compensation.

In response, the Parliamentary Affairs Minister said that till now Rs 19.90 lakh has been distributed as compensation to the dependents of the victims. We will expedite the process. During the proceedings, a heated debate was witnessed in the assembly on the issue of domicile. Jamshedpur (East) MLA Saryu Rai asked whether the state government intended to formulate a domicile policy on the basis of 1932-Khatian (Land Records).

In response, Alam said that the Chief Minister has already given a reply in this matter. The issue is being assessed and the government will take a decision soon. The issue was debated by AJSU chief Sudesh Mahto, MLA Pradeep Yadav and JMM MLA Jai Prakash Bhai Patel. He sought a time frame from the government to arrive at a decision.
