Counting of votes for the second phase of Panchayat elections, which began in Jharkhand on Sunday, continues amid tight security. The second round of the four-phase panchayat elections was held on May 19. An election official gave this information.

State Election Commission (SEC) secretary Radhe Shyam Prasad said that since voting was held in the ballot papers, it would take a few days for the final results to be declared. Meanwhile, the campaigning for the third phase of panchayat elections ended on Sunday evening.

More than 68 per cent of the 38.82 lakh voters exercised their franchise in 872 panchayats where a total of 21,872 candidates were in the fray for the posts of pradhan, zilla parishad members, panchayat members among others.

So far 5,093 eligible candidates have been declared elected unopposed in this phase. Let us tell you that Panchayat elections in Jharkhand are not held on party lines.

A total of 1,047 panchayats will vote in the third phase on May 24. Counting of votes will take place on May 31. At the same time, the last phase of elections will be held on May 27. The results of the first phase of polling were declared last week.
