Four children died after drowning at Chhath Ghat of Usri river in Giridih district on Tuesday. After this accident, mourning has spread in four houses. The deceased include Ajay Sharma’s daughter Diksha Kumari (6 years), Pinku Singh’s daughter Sonakshi Kumari (7 years), Madan Singh’s daughter Suhana Kumari (9 years) Mahesh Singh’s son Munna Kumar (10 years). This incident took place in the Usri river located in Mangrodih of Sadar block.

The families of the children told that the four children along with their mother had gone to Chhath Ghat situated on the river 200 feet away from the house to prepare for Chhath Puja. Mother was preparing for the puja. During this the children got busy playing. The mother returned after washing the clothes and the children remained there.

Four children drowned in a ten feet deep lair

Local people told that when the children did not return home even after an hour, people started searching for them. Then the people went to the river gorge to find the children. There he saw the body of a child floating in the water. After this, when the search was done, all the children were found dead there. After this, one by one the children were pulled out of the river. Local people told that there is a 10 feet deep ditch in the river. The children could not realize this and everyone got absorbed in it.

Villagers asked questions to the administration – why barricading was not done

After getting information about this incident, the local administration reached the spot. But he had to face opposition from the local people. Expressing the displeasure of the people, he said that when the dam was prepared, why was the barricading not done in the deep area? Why was no effort made to stop the children from going there?
