Jet skis, drones to track illegal sand mining Mangaluru News – Times of India

Mangaluru: Dakshina Kannada District Administration considering buying or renting jet ski And drone, to keep an eye illegal sand mining,
Deputy Commissioner KV Rajendra He said that he has received several complaints regarding illegal sand mining. “The district administration needs drones to keep a watch on illegal sand mining, especially in places that are not easily and quickly accessible. It often happens that on getting the information and by the time the team reaches the spot, the miscreants run away through an alternate route. They have roadside informers, and therefore easily escape upon seeing officers coming to raid. Often, the authorities confiscate only the boats used for illegal sand mining, and transporting them to shore is another challenge,” the DC said.
“Therefore, we have decided to increase surveillance along the river. Drones and speed boats or jet skis will be hired or bought to check illegal sand mining.”
Last week, reacting to complaints of rampant illegal mining in Dakshina Kannada, the DC asked officials, in a meeting, to conduct a joint survey to check whether the mines were operating legally, and Asked revenue department to use drones to locate stone quarries and crushers.
Highmast lights will be installed on the beaches
The administration is contemplating to purchase highmast lights through the District Tourism Committee. Rajendra said six beaches, including Someshwara, Batapady, Tannirbhavi, Panambur, Surathkal-Iddya and Shashithilu, have been identified for installation of high-mast lights. Based on the funds available in the first phase, the administration expects every beach to have at least one high mast light.
The DC said that the tourism department officials have been asked to submit a report on the same, adding that there should be no dark spots on any beach in the district. The issue has been discussed with the elected representatives in the meeting of the District Tourism Committee. “We want all the beaches in the district to be well lit, so that the beaches can be used gradually from 7 pm to 11 pm,” he said.
