Jeremy Renner, who plays Hawkeye and Downey’s character Iron Man till Avengers: Endgame, have appeared together in several Marvel films dating back to the 2012’s The Avengers.
Robert Downey Jr.’s return to the MCU, announced at the San Diego Comic-Con 2024, came as a huge and happy surprise to many Marvel fans. You might think you’d be incredibly lucky to know this news first, but naturally, his close friends and family would be in on it, right? However, as it turns out, you might actually be among the first ones to know! Apparently, the Iron Man actor had kept this secret even from his close friends and Avengers co-stars, despite being good friends with them in real life. Jeremy Renner recently revealed that he was also taken aback by the announcement that Robert Downey Jr. will be returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Renner, who plays Hawkeye and Downey’s character Iron Man till Avengers: Endgame, have appeared together in several Marvel films dating back to the 2012’s The Avengers.
Despite the two actors being close friends, Downey did not even let Renner or any of the original Avengers actors (Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans and Scarlett Johansson) know about it. They had no idea that he was returning to the Marvel Universe in the role of villain Doctor Doom.
“No! I had no idea. He didn’t say anything to me,” Renner said. “We’re good friends. There’s the Avengers family chat. The original six. He said not a peep. I got online and started blowing up his phone like, ‘What’s going on? You’ve been hiding this from us the whole time?’ It’s exciting news. I’m really, really excited about it,” he told US Weekly.
Downey might not be the only one returning to Marvel in the next two Avengers films including 2026’s Avengers: Doomsday and 2027’s Avengers: Secret Wars. Renner, whose last MCU appearance was the Hawkeye series on Disney+, also informed US Weekly that he’ll probably be back in the Avengers and facing off against Downey’s Doctor Doom, although it is still too early to say anything.
Renner has not played Hawkeye since his 2023 snow plow accident. Earlier this year, Renner had reportedly told Entertainment Tonight that his physical therapy was helping him get healthy and he would soon be ready to play Hawkeye again.
