Supreme Court has allowed Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main Candidates desirous of making representations regarding the decision of National Testing Agency (NTA) To reduce the number of sessions of JEE Main 2022. This year, the number of chances a student can get in the engineering entrance exam has been reduced to two. Last year, students were allowed to take the exam four times.

A three-judge bench of Justices DY Chandrachud, Surya Kant and Bela Tiwari said the court cannot interfere with the policy decisions of the authorities, but the petitioners can raise their concerns before the NTA.

NTA had conducted JEE Main 2021 in four sessions giving candidates two additional chances in view of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, this year the additional efforts were withdrawn. The petitioner, in his plea seeking the intervention of the court, had argued that the sudden reduction in the session of the entrance examination would add to the hardships of the candidates.

It further said that several representations were made before the NTA, but the exam conducting agency did not respond or give notice to the applicants that the examination would be conducted in only two sessions.

The plea argued that the change in the number of attempts was introduced at the last minute with the issuance of the order on March 15, while the examinations are to be conducted in April and May. The last minute change was going to hamper the preparation of many candidates.

The petition was filed by advocate Sumant Nukla on behalf of a person named Krishna Rana. After granting liberty to the petitioner to the aggrieved students, the court disposed of the petition.

The first session of JEE Main 2022 is scheduled to be held on April 21, 24, 25, 29 and May 1, while session 2 will be held from May 24 to 29. The registration process for the first session of JEE Main 2022 has already been done. is completed and soon the admit cards will be issued to the candidates.
