JD(U) raises demand for special status afresh before PM Modi’s visit to Bihar

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s Janata Dal (United) has renewed the demand for special category status ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the state.

JD(U) Parliamentary Board chief Upendra Kushwaha raised the demand in a lengthy Facebook post on Monday, reminding Modi of his party’s old ties with the BJP despite ideological differences.

Later speaking to reporters, Kushwaha, who also served in the Union Council of Ministers headed by Modi from 2014 to 2018, clarified that he did not expect the prime minister to make any such announcement during his visit on Tuesday.

Modi is scheduled to reach the Bihar capital on Tuesday evening, which will be his first visit to the state since October-November, 2020, when he led an intense campaign for the NDA during the state assembly elections.

His itinerary includes attending a function to be held at the historic assembly complex here, which has completed 100 years of its construction. “In my Facebook post, I have given a warm welcome to the Prime Minister under whose leadership I have had the privilege of working. I have also highlighted the similarities that he shares with our Chief Minister, both of whom have a reputation for honesty in public life,” Kushwaha said.

He also said that as far as his party is concerned, the demand for special status has been going on for a long time. He avoided a question whether the demand was raised to embarrass the state BJP, with whom he has been face-to-face.
