Jay Shah and former cricketers laud Virat Kohli’s illustrious stint as Test captain

BCCI Secretary Jay Shah has congratulated Virat Kohli for his illustrious stint as the Test captain of Team India. Kohli on Saturday announced that he has resigned as India’s Test captain. The announcement came after India’s shocking defeat in the Test series against South Africa. Kohli took over the charge of Test captaincy after MS Dhoni announced his retirement from the longest format. India was ranked 7th when he was made captain and he topped the Test rankings with India.

The BCCI secretary took to Twitter and lauded Kohli for bringing about a fitness revolution in the Indian team, which helped in some exemplary performances in both domestic and overseas conditions.

“Congratulations to @imVkohli on a wonderful stint as #TeamIndia captain. Virat transformed the team into a brutally fit unit that performed admirably both in India and outside. Test wins in Australia and England have been special,” Jay Shah wrote on Twitter.

Kohli’s teammate Suresh Raina was surprised by Kohli’s decision from the 2011 World Cup win but said he respected his call.

“Although I am also shocked by the sudden decision of @imVkohli, I respect his call. I can only commend him for what he has done for world cricket and India. Easily one of the most aggressive and fittest players India has ever produced. Hope he continues to shine for India as a player,” tweeted Raina.

Former India wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel also congratulated Kohli for his time as the captain of Team India.

“#ViratKohli has been the most successful Test captain for India and he can be proud of his achievements. Congratulations on a wonderful innings as captain. #CricketTwitter,” he tweeted.

Harbhajan Singh and Aakash Chopra were in shock as they reacted to Kohli’s announcement via Twitter.

Former India pacer Irfan Pathan also pointed to Kohli’s influence as a captain and said that his name will always top the list when it comes to Indian cricket captains.

“Whenever it comes to Indian cricket captains in Test cricket, @imVkohli’s name will be there not only for the results but also for the impact he has as a captain. Thank you #ViratKohli,” he wrote.

Wasim Jaffer talks about the emergence of the Indian Test team in overseas conditions under Kohli’s captaincy.

“When Virat took over as Test captain, India winning a Test overseas was a feat, now if India loses an overseas Test series it is upset. And that is how he has taken Indian cricket forward and that will be his legacy. Congratulations on successful governance of @imVkohli,” he wrote

Earlier, last year, Kohli had relinquished the T20I captaincy after the ICC T20 World Cup and was later sacked as the ODI captain as the selectors wanted a single captain for the white-ball formats. Rohit Sharma was named the captain of India’s white-ball formats. Meanwhile, no one was expecting Kohli to step down as the Test captaincy at this juncture as his latest announcement shook the cricketing world.
