Javed Khan Amrohi, Lagaan and Andaz Apna Apna Actor, Passes Away After Lungs Failure

Veteran actor Javed Khan Amrohi, who appeared in films like Lagaan, Andaz Apna Apna and Chak De India, passed away on Tuesday at a Mumbai hospital due to lung failure, according to his filmmaker Ramesh Talwar. He was in his early 70s.

The veteran actor was suffering from a respiratory illness and was bedridden for the last one year. Talwar told PTI that he was undergoing treatment at Surya Nursing Home in suburban Mumbai. “He passed away at the hospital around 1 pm as both his lungs had failed,” he said.

Actor Akhilendra Mishra, his frequent collaborator from Amrohi’s theater days and his Lagaan co-star, said he had been ill for a long time.

“He was my senior in theatre. He was an active member of IPTA (Indian People’s Theater Association) Mumbai since the 1970s.”

He told that the last rites of the actor will be performed at Oshiwara cemetery at 7.30 pm.

Started his career in theater after graduating from Film and Television Institute of India. India (FTII), Amrohi appeared in small but important roles in over 150 films and nearly a dozen TV shows.

He is best known for playing the role of barber Karim in the TV show “Nukkad” in the late 1980s; Anand Akela, one of the suitors of Raveena Tandon’s character in Andaz Apna Apna; Cricket commentator in Lagaan, and support staff of the Indian women’s hockey team in Chak De India.

Stage and film actor Danish Hussain took to Twitter to offer condolences. “Extremely saddened to hear about the demise of #JavedKhanAmrohiBhai. It seems to be the season of farewell. Condolences to his family, friends, colleagues @iptamumbai #Nukkad #Lagaan, etc,” wrote Hussain.

Film industry veteran Girish Johar took to Twitter to express his grief over the demise of the veteran actor. He tweeted, “Irreparable loss 💔RIP #JavedKhanAmrohi ji a great talent…will always be missed 🙏🏼🙏🏼💐.”

Fans of the late actor flooded social media with condolence messages. One of his fans tweeted, “RIP Javed Khan Amrohi 💐

#JavedKhanAmrohi #RIP.” Another fan wrote, “The news of #JavedKhanAmrohi’s demise is quite sad. The news just made me revisit that beautiful “daal chawal” interaction he had with the girls in Chak De India, and achanak se mujhe Sukhlal ji’s daal chawal yaad aane large. Rest In Peace Sir.”

Amrohi’s other notable titles are hit films of the 90s such as Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke, Laadla, Ishq and the 1988 TV series Mirza Ghalib. Her last reported film credit was “Sadak 2” (2020), in which she reprized her role of Pakya from the 1991 original “Sadak”.

The actor is survived by a son and a daughter.
