Javed Akhtar reacts to Kangana Ranaut’s ‘begging’ remark: ‘Which had nothing to do with freedom…’

Lyricist Javed Akhtar takes a veiled dig at the actress Kangana Ranaut For his statement on the independence of the country. Ranaut recently declared that India had achieved “real independence” in 2014, when the Narendra Modi-led government came to power, and in 1947 the country’s independence in the form of “bhik”, or begging. The description gave rise to a controversy.

Now Akhtar has reacted to her comment on Twitter without directly mentioning Kangana in his post. Javed Akhtar wrote, “It is completely understandable (competent). Those who had nothing to do with the freedom movement, why would they feel bad if someone (one) called our freedom just a ‘beg’ “

Recently, Javed Akhtar and Kangana Ranaut have been in the news for their ongoing legal battle. Akhtar had filed a complaint in the court in November last year, claiming that Kangana had made defamatory statements against him in a television interview, which had allegedly damaged his reputation.

Meanwhile, Kangana was recently awarded the Padma Shri and the National Film Award for Best Actress for her performances in Manikarnika: Queen of Jhansi and Panga. After creating controversy, the actress said that she would return her Padma Shri if her statements were proved wrong.

On the work front, Kangana Ranaut has several projects lined up including Dhaakad, Tejas, Manikarnika Returns: The Legend of Didda, Emergency, Aparajita Ayodhya and The Avatar: Sita. He recently announced his first production Tiku Weds Sheru. Directed by Sai Kabir, it stars actors Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Avneet Kaur. The film is his first digital venture and will be produced under Manikarnika Films.
