In March this year, Javed Akhtar had also filed a petition in a Mumbai court challenging the summons issued against him in the defamation case.

Javed Akhtar was summoned by the Mulund court on Thursday, 20 April. However, the lyricists did not appear. His lawyer informed the court about this, after which the court issued fresh summons against Akhtar. Now he has been asked to appear on 20 June 2023.

This is in relation to a defamation case that was filed against Akhtar by Santosh Dubey, a Mumbai-based lawyer, after he drew a comparison between the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and the terrorist organization Taliban. Reportedly, Dubey sent a defamation notice of Rs 100 crore to Akhtar for allegedly making “false and derogatory” remarks and damaging the “image and dignity of the RSS”. Apart from this, the lawyer had also sought a written apology from Akhtar.

When Javed Akhtar challenged the summons issued against him

In March this year, Javed Akhtar had also filed a petition in a Mumbai court challenging the summons issued against him in the defamation case. The lyricist claimed that the complainant i.e. Advocate Dubey had no authority and had not placed any authorization letter on record to show that he was empowered by the RSS to file the defamation complaint. However, Akhtar’s plea was dismissed by the court.

He recently courted controversy over his comments about the 26/11 terror attacks. During an event in Lahore, when a journalist asked him to tell people in India that Pakistan is ‘a positive, friendly and loving country’, Akhtar reminded him about the 26/11 terror attacks.
