Jasprit Bumrah should take the needle of opposition from time to time: Zaheer Khan

Former India pacer Zaheer Khan said that if Jasprit Bumrah motivates him to perform, he should “put the needle of the opposition”. Zaheer was talking about Bumrah’s exploits at the Lord’s Test, where he played a big role in India’s victory. Bumrah was involved in a war of words with the English players and then he performed brilliantly with bat and ball.

It all started with Bumrah throwing a bouncer to James Anderson. England tried to avenge Bumrah by taking the short ball route, but the batsman made a significant contribution with the bat which helped India extend their lead. After that he also worked with the ball.

He said, ‘If in anger, he can handle himself and perform like this, then I believe he should dodge the opposition at times. Look, in the first innings, he went without a wicket and being a class bowler, I am sure it must have bothered him,” Zaheer said on Cricbuzz.

“After that, the whole episode of Anderson came out, he bowled bouncers to him and then while batting, the way the England pacer went after him… England must have been thinking ‘we should have let Bumrah bowl the bouncer’ and with him Must not mess with. The intensity with which he bowled was commendable.”

Zaheer especially praised Bumrah for his slow delivery to Ollie Robinson.

“Bowling a slow ball is challenging, but to bowl it round the wicket, to get a batsman out lbw from that angle, you need the ball close to the wicket, which is never easy. Bumrah worked very hard. The thought process was excellent. When you are coming around the wicket, the batsman is also thinking ‘they can use the bouncer more’. To bring that kind of variety and to keep that mindset to get that wicket, Bumrah was fantastic.”
