In a tragic incident, at least three soldiers died after falling into a deep gorge while patrolling the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kupwara district. According to an Army official, the dead included a Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) and two other ranks.

He further said that the incident took place when the three were on routine patrolling in Machil sector and slipped into the ditch on Tuesday, January 10.

Srinagar-based Chinar said, “During a routine operations task in the forward area, a party of 01 JCO and 02 OR slipped into a deep gorge when snow fell on the track. The mortal remains of the three bravehearts have been retrieved. ” Core wrote on Twitter.

The martyred soldiers have been identified as Naib Subedar Purushottam Kumar, Havaldar Amrik Singh and Constable Amit Sharma.

Kumar, 43, a resident of Jammu and Kashmir’s Bishnah area, had joined the Army in 1996. He is survived by his wife and two children.

Singh, 39, had joined the Army in 2001 and hailed from Himachal Pradesh’s Una district. He is survived by his wife and a son.

Sharma, 23, had joined the Army in 2019 and was a resident of Himachal Pradesh’s Hamirpur district. His family consists of his mother.

the soldiers were on routine duty

Giving more details, a defense spokesman said that the incident took place around 5.30 pm on Tuesday when a party of troops was on routine operational duty.

A search and rescue operation was immediately launched with troops from the nearest post, he added. “Despite adverse weather conditions and rough terrain, the mortal remains of three brave soldiers were recovered between 04:15 to 04:45 hours today morning due to the continuous efforts of the search team,” he said.
