Jamia professor solves mystery behind blood clots, honored by President of India

Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) Professor Mohd. Zahid Ashraf, Head, Department of Biotechnology has been awarded the Visitor Award 2020 by President Ram Nath Kovind for his pioneering research on solving the mystery of blood clotting in exposure to hypoxia at high altitudes. The award ceremony was held at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Tuesday.

Pro. Ashraf was given this award under the biological science category, in which the maximum number of entries (29) were received. Pro. Ashraf received Rs 2,50,000 as a citation and prize money.

Pro. Ashraf’s work has contributed significantly to developing strategies for early diagnosis and treatment of thrombosis in extremely challenging environmental conditions at high altitude, informed the institute in its press release. In the field of hypoxia, Prof. This appreciation has been given keeping in view the immense contribution of Ashraf and his important role in the development of heart diseases.

Prof. Najma Akhtar, Vice-Chancellor, Jamia who has recently been conferred with Padma, presented Prof. Ashraf and mentioned that this is a recognition for research achievements by the University. He stressed that for the first time in the glorious history of Jamia, many decorations have come. “The achievements of Prof. Ashraf will inspire other faculty members to excel in academics as well as research. He said.

Pro. Ashraf is an Elected Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences, Allahabad and the Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore. He is a member of the prestigious Guha Research Council.

Pro. Ashraf is also the recipient of National Bioscience Award of Basanti Devi Amir Chand of ICMR and DBT for his seminal work on high altitude related thrombosis in Indian population. The results of their research have provided insight into our understanding of blood clots in the mountains, sport, pilgrimage and when soldiers work in hostile environments.

This is the second time that a Jamia professor has been honored with the Visitor’s Award. Earlier in 2015, Center for Theoretical Physics, JMI’s Prof. The Cosmology and Astrophysics Research Group, headed by M. Sami, also received the Visitor Award for pioneering research in the area of ​​Contemporary Issues in Astrophysics and Cosmology.
