Jamia Millia Islamia has constituted a committee to look into the implementation of the University Grants Commission’s directive to introduce a four-year undergraduate honors degree from the next academic session. A senior official of the university has given this information.

The report of the committee will be presented during the academic council meeting in January, after which the executive council, the highest decision-making body of the university, will take up the matter.

Currently, students become eligible for an Honors degree after completing a three-year undergraduate program.

“We have constituted a committee to look into the implementation of the directions of the University Grants Commission (UGC) on four-year undergraduate degrees. The committee is looking into the matter and is expected to submit a report in this regard soon,” said registrar Nazim Hussain Al-Jafri.

He said that the committee is making a strategy to divide the three-year course into four years.

The Academic Council will discuss the matter during a meeting in January. After that, the Executive Council will discuss the matter,” Al-Jaafari said.

Earlier this month, the UGC notified the curriculum and credit framework for undergraduate programmes, which will provide multiple options for entry and exit to students, a choice between single major and dual major and interdisciplinary options of subjects.

It has asked all higher education institutions to take necessary steps to adopt the curriculum and credit structure for undergraduate programmes.

The framework has been developed by modifying the existing choice-based credit system.

As per the programme, students will be able to pursue only a four-year honors degree instead of the three-year course as at present. Honors degrees will also be awarded in two categories – Honors and Honors with Research.

The curriculum and credit framework for undergraduate programs also allows for multiple entry and exit options for students. If they leave before three years, they will be allowed to re-join within three years of exit and must complete their degree within the stipulated period of seven years.
