Jalsa director on bringing Vidya Balan and Shefali Shah together for the film: ‘I was just too greedy’

Vidya Balan and Shefali Shah are soon coming together for Amazon Prime Video’s upcoming film Jalsa. The poster and trailer of the film has already been released. In the drama thriller, Vidya plays the popular journalist Maya, while Shefali Shah plays Rukhsana, Maya’s domestic help. The film marks the first time coming together of these two great actresses who have proved time and again that they can carry a film or web series on their shoulders single-handedly.

Recently, Jalsa director Suresh Triveni also spoke about casting Vidya and Shefali together and mentioned that he loves working with brilliant actors. “I love making films because I get a chance to work with great actors. Vidya, after working in Tumhari Sulu, I knew working with her had spoiled you, and you wanted to go back to her with one more film. So that was the only purpose. The second was after watching Delhi Crime, and of course, I have been following Shefali’s work for a while now. I was very greedy and then I thought, the idea came that, what if I bring these two together? he said.

The trailer of Jalsa was released earlier this month, sharing a glimpse of the thrilling experience that the film promises. The trailer shows how Vidya’s character stands in solidarity with Shefali’s character, who lost her daughter in a road accident until she gets some big revelations.

During the trailer launch of the film, Vidya Balan revealed how she initially turned down the script. “I loved it when Suresh narrated the script but I said I can’t do it. I didn’t have courage. But when the pandemic struck, something changed. It changed all of us in a very deep way. And then I had a conversation with Suresh and he told me that he has reworked the script. So I wanted to re-read it and be sure about it,” she said.

Apart from Vidya Balan and Shefali Shah, Jalsa also stars Manav Kaul, Rohini Hattangadi, Iqbal Khan, Vidyarthi Bandi, Shrikant Mohan Yadav, Shafin Patel and Surya Kasibhatla. It will have its global premiere on Amazon Prime Video on 18 March 2022 in India and in 240 countries and territories around the world.
