The National Commission for Scheduled Tribes has sought a report from Rajasthan chief secretary and police chief on the suicide of a man who blamed cabinet minister Mahesh Joshi, among others, for his extreme step.

In its notice issued on Thursday, the NCST said it has taken suo motu cognizance of the matter and decided to investigate it.

Ramprasad Meena hanged himself in a godown near his house in Silver Mint area here on Monday.

In a video recorded before ending his life, Ramprasad alleged that public health engineering department (PHED) minister Joshi and others caused a lot of trouble to his family, forcing him to take the extreme step . Joshi, however, has denied the allegations.

The NCST has issued notices to Chief Secretary Usha Sharma, Director General of Police Umesh Mishra, Jaipur Police Commissioner Anand Srivastava, Collector Prakash Rajpurohit and Commissioner Jaipur Heritage Municipal Corporation Vishram Meena and sought an action taken report within three days.

“The Commission has taken suo motu cognizance of the matter and has decided to conduct an inquiry/enquiry into the matter,” the notice said.

If the Commission does not receive the reply within the stipulated time, it may exercise the power of civil court conferred on it and issue summons for personal appearance.

Meanwhile, the family members of Ramprasad continued their protest outside the godown where he committed suicide for the fifth consecutive day.

The family refused to cremate the body until their demands – arrest of the accused, compensation and a government job for a family member – were met.

“The postmortem was done at the spot last evening but the family members have refused to cremate the body. An official of the district administration said, efforts are being made to pacify them.

It is alleged that on the behest of Joshi, a hotel owner and other people were harassing Ramprasad. The hotel owner had made an illegal construction which was demolished by the Municipal Corporation after Ramprasad’s suicide.

According to the relatives of Ramprasad, the accused wanted to grab his land.

Based on a complaint lodged by Ramprasad’s brother, a case was registered against Joshi and five others in connection with the incident on Monday night.
