‘It’s very sweet of snow’: Ashwin receives 2 special gifts from Kapil Dev to surpass his Test bowling record

The first India vs Sri Lanka test match in Mohali was memorable for so many players of the team.

For Virat Kohli, he represented the country for the hundredth time in the longest format, while Rohit Sharma began his Test captaincy journey. All-rounder Ravindra Jadeja recorded the highest score – 175 not out – while batting. Backed it up with 7 and 9 wicket matches. Meanwhile, ace spinner Ravichandran Ashwin created history, becoming the second highest wicket-taker in Test cricket, surpassing former captain Kapil Dev’s 434 wickets.

Ashwin got his 435th Test wicket when he dismissed Charit Aslanka in Sri Lanka’s second innings. After India’s remarkable win by an innings and 222 runs, the off-spinner wrote a heartfelt post on Instagram, describing the milestone as nothing less than a dream.

In response, Kapil heaped heavy praise on the 35-year-old, endorsing him to take him to 500. However it was not so. In a recent video shared on BCCI’s social media handle, Ashwin revealed that the legendary all-rounder sent some mementos after his memorable achievement.

“It was very sweet of Kapil paaji. She actually sent a bouquet home and also sent a small hand-written note congratulating me for passing it on,” he said.

Ashwin is now second only to Anil Kumble, who has taken 619 wickets in Test cricket. The former expressed his gratitude towards some of the greats of Indian cricket whom he looked up to while growing up.

“You know…sometimes people forget that people like Kapil Dev, Sachin Tendulkar, Anil Kumble, Harbhajan Singh…who have done incredible things in the past are one of the reasons why I am sitting here today. Therefore, we should be deeply indebted to such people and at the same time be very humble in what we are doing. I am extremely happy and grateful to all those people.”
