Kolkata: BCCI President Sourav Ganguly Trying to avoid controversy surrounding the national selectors’ decision not to send injured opener Shubman Gill to England on Thursday, he said it was a matter for the selection committee to consider.
The Indian team management had made a request on 28 June through administrative manager Girish Dongre for the replacement of the two openers, preferably Prithvi Shaw and devdutt padikkal.
But chairman of selectors Chetan Sharma did not send any formal reply to that mail till a few days ago as the four openers are already in the UK.
Asked about the controversial issue, Ganguly, while addressing reporters on his 49th birthday on Thursday, said: “It is the call of the selectors.”

Both Shaw and Padikkal are in Sri Lanka with India’s white-ball team led by Shikhar Dahan for the six-match series.

“It will not be something that we will handle. It will start in September,” he told reporters here.
Ganguly reiterated that the BCCI was forced to move this year’s ICC World T20 to the UAE keeping in mind the safety of all stakeholders.
The T20 World Cup was to be held in India in October-November this year.
“Sad but no one has seen such situation in their entire lifetime. These are extraordinary circumstances.
He said, “Last year the World Cup was canceled and this year if the World Cup gets canceled again due to COVID, it is a big loss for the game. So we have taken it to a safer place.”
Ganguly, who suffered a mild heart attack in January this year and underwent rapid primary angioplasty, said he is doing well now.
“I’m completely fit. It’s been another year, it’s like that. In these COVID times, you just try and be as calm as you can. It’s up to the people around you rather than you.
“The people of the house have made preparations to celebrate. It is a closed door celebration,” he said.
