The director noted that even after decades of Kal Ho Naa Ho’s release, the film continues to receive praises.
The 2003 super hit film Kal Ho Naa Ho, considered a Bollywood classic, is set to return to the big screens after 20 years. As per the reports, the film is going to be re-released in theatres on November 15. In a recent media interaction, the director of the film Nikkhil Advani detailed the budget of the film and how it would have been received in theatres and the box-office, if made today. The director appeared for an interaction with a media portal, delving into the production of the film and how its story and characters were the driving force behind its success. He said, “Earlier, we could make a Kal Ho Naa Ho and no one used to care how much it was made for and how it’s doing. It was made for Rs 32 crore.” Speaking further, he added, “If you talk in terms of the inflation today, it would have made more than Rs 1000 crore.”
The director noted that even after decades of Kal Ho Naa Ho’s release, the film continues to receive praises from the fans and audience alike. Mentioning some memorable and iconic moments from the film, he added that people still talk about Shah Rukh Khan’s chain; and Aman’s death, which still devastates the audience.
Advani is of the belief that a true blockbuster resonates with the audience even after decades of its release. According to him, the filmmakers today focus on the box-office numbers of a project like Rs 800 crore, instead of it being centred around the cultural impact a film could have. He stated, “Today, we are only talking about Rs 800 crore!”
Kal Ho Naa Ho had its release on November 28, 2003. The film featured names like Shah Rukh Khan, Saif Ali Khan and Preity Zinta as the leads, along with Jaya Bachchan, Sushma Seth, Reema Lagoo and many others. It is produced by Yash Johar under the banner of Dharma Productions while the music was given by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy.
