The former Indian skipper, MS Dhoni lamented on that infamous run-out against New Zealand in the ODI World Cup 2019 and opened up on the heartbreak moment.

MS Dhoni drew curtains on his international career following a heartbreaking defeat in the semi-final of the 2019 ICC ODI World Cup. Regarded as one of the greatest finishers, Dhoni failed in his last assignment in international cricket. Against New Zealand in Manchester, India’s top order faced a collapse. Indian fans kept their faith in Dhoni, who revived the innings with Ravindra Jadeja.

Many believe the result would have been different if Dhoni had not been run out by Martin Guptill. Almost five years after that dismissal, the World Cup-winning skipper opened up on the painful memory while speaking at a public event.

A video featuring the conversation was dropped on X (formerly Twitter) and went viral in no time. In the clip, a fan can be seen asking MS Dhoni how he dealt with the ODI World Cup defeat in 2019. The Chennai Super Kings legend admitted that it was hard to digest as he wanted to be on the winning side in his last World Cup appearance.

“It was a difficult one because I knew that this would be my last World Cup, so it would have been good to be on the winning side. It was a heartbreak moment but we accepted the result and we tried to move on,” MS Dhoni was heard saying in the viral video.

MS Dhoni also revealed that it took time for him to get out of the disappointment. The legendary skipper, however, had ample time to do so as he did not play any more international games after the World Cup semi-final.

“Time thoda lagta hai aur World Cup ke baad thoda time mil bhi jata hai. Maine toh uske baad international khela nahi hai toh mujhe toh kaafi time mila hai, [It takes time and one gets some time after the World Cup. I didn’t play any internationally after that, so I got enough time]. So you just accept that you tried your best, but you were not able to win it,” MS Dhoni told the fan.
