It might be easy for them to pick someone like Chakraborty’: Gavaskar suggests major bowling changes for India against AFG

After back-to-back horrific losses in the ongoing t20 world cup 2021, India would like to make a strong comeback when they go ahead Afghanistan in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday. If Virat Kohli & Co want to survive in the semi-final race, they will have to not only do well to win the game but also improve their net run rate.

The team management is under scrutiny for the selection of India’s playing XI for the last two matches. And now, as they gear up against a spin-heavy side, former India captain and batting legend Sunil Gavaskar has suggested that the Men in Blue should take the field with three spinners.

In a conversation with India Today, Gavaskar said that India may consider bringing in Ravichandran Ashwin in place of Varun Chakraborty, adding that Afghanistan can play mystery spin better than most teams.

“There is no harm in thinking of going with three spinners. And perhaps there is no one like Sharul Thakur or Mohammed Shami. Go with 2 fast bowlers and 3 spinners because even if Hardik can come and 2 overs of medium pace, you will still have 3 medium pacers in the team,” Gavaskar said.

“A top-class spinner like R Ashwin, it doesn’t matter whether he is a right-arm bowler or a left-arm bowler. If you look at the number of mystery spinners that Afghanistan have, look at players like Mujeeb and a few others who don’t play in the XI, they have a plethora of mystery spinners.

“So, it might be easier for them to pick someone like Varun Chakravarthy. So of course I would look at someone like R Ashwin. If they are looking for someone who can slow down the pace, they can look at Rahul Chahar,” he said.

India played against Varun Chakravarthy and Ravindra Jadeja in the last two matches. However, the spin duo failed to make an impact with their bowling. Both have not taken a single wicket in the tournament so far.

At the same time, India is on the verge of an early exit from the T20 World Cup as it is yet to register a win. They started their campaign losing to Pakistan by 10 wickets and then beat New Zealand by 8 wickets.

As Pakistan have already qualified for the semi-finals, the Men in Blue will have to win all their remaining games by a huge margin and want Afghanistan to beat New Zealand on 7 October.
