An Israeli airstrike on an arms depot in Syria on Sunday killed two pro-Iranian fighters and wounded three soldiers, an official monitoring the war said.

“The Israeli strikes targeted an arms depot belonging to pro-Iranian forces located between the provinces of Tartus and Hama,” said Rami Abdel Rahman, head of the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

“Two pro-Iran fighters were killed and three Syrian soldiers were wounded,” he told AFP.

Syrian state news agency SANA, citing a military source, reported that “at around 7:15 am (0415 GMT), the Israeli enemy launched an airstrike, firing missiles from the direction of northern Lebanon, with targets in the Tartus and Hama rural areas. “

Sana’a did not specify the target but said the attack “wounded three soldiers and caused some material damage”, adding that Syrian air defenses intercepted some missiles.

The Israeli military said it did not comment “on reports in foreign media”.

Since Syria’s civil war broke out in 2011, Israel has launched hundreds of airstrikes against its northern neighbor, targeting government troops as well as Iran-backed forces and Lebanon’s Hezbollah fighters.

The Israeli military rarely comments on individual strikes against Syria, but has repeatedly vowed to keep up its air campaign to prevent arch-enemy Iran from consolidating its presence.

The Observatory said three people were killed Tuesday after Israeli warplanes struck the airport in Syria’s second city, Aleppo.

On 19 February, an Israeli airstrike killed 15 people in a Damascus district that houses state security agencies, according to war monitors.
