Israel approves COVID-19 vaccine for children under five

Jerusalem: Israel’s health ministry on Wednesday approved the vaccination of children aged 6 months to five years against COVID-19. The health ministry said the vaccine was specifically recommended for people who were at high risk because of a chronic disease or medical treatment that weakened their immune system.

Israel has been seeing a surge in coronavirus cases in recent weeks, but has refrained from reimposing any restrictions on large gatherings or mandatory face masks, following its biggest wave of infections in April was at its peak.

About half of Israel’s 9.4 million population has received three doses of Pfizer Inc./BioNTech SE’s COVID vaccine, and about 830,000 have received a quarter.
