Israel agrees to dissolve coalition, hold new elections

Bennett’s office said PM Naftali Bennett and his main coalition partner Yair Lapid decided to introduce a vote to dissolve parliament in the coming days. Lapid would then serve as the caretaker prime minister.

Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett’s office announced on Monday that their weakened coalition would be dissolved and that the country would hold new elections.

Bennett has struggled to hold together his unruly coalition of eight parties, and defections have left the crumbling coalition without a majority in parliament for more than two months.

Bennett’s office said Bennett and his main coalition partner Yair Lapid decided to introduce a vote to dissolve parliament in the coming days. Lapid would then serve as the caretaker prime minister.

The election, expected in the fall, will be Israel’s fifth in three years.
